CRESTON PUBLIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ORGANIZATION AND POLICY MANUAL

5.1 General Employment Policies

a. - The Board deems it critical to recruit and retain the most qualified people in terms of attitude, skills and ability to meet the position's needs, in a fair, equitable and consistent manner, both internally and externally. The Board shall endeavour to uphold the policy of equal employment opportunity and shall treat all employees and potential employees with fairness and respect at all times.

b. - The Board recognizes all staff as active participants in carrying out the library's mission, objectives and goals. All staff will endeavour to practice a consultative management style where they listen to the input of others and frame recommendations and decisions based on the highest caliber of professionalism, ethical conduct and commitment. Open, honest communication between all levels of staff must be practiced without fear of reprisal in order for input to be considered of the highest caliber.

c. - The Employment Standards Act shall apply where its terms are superior to that of policy.

d. - Support Staff will be required to give one-month notice of termination of employment. This notice shall be in writing.

e. - Chief Librarian will be required to give 60 days notice of termination of employment. This notice shall be in writing.

f. - Relatives of members of the Board or library staff shall not be considered for employment.

g. - Each employee shall have his or her performance evaluated on a regular annual basis.

h. - Upon resignation or termination, letters of reference shall be written by either the Board or the Chief Librarian at their discretion and shall reflect an honest opinion of the performance of duties of the employee during their period of employment with the library.

i. - The library is an equal opportunity employer and will strive to uphold the integrity of these employment practices.
