What is a Cookie?

Specifically a computer cookie.

A cookie is just a small text file that a website saves  to your computer. It is one of the ways websites can store session information between visits. For example a website might use a cookie to store shopping cart contents or user login information.

Cookies cannot install virus or malware because they are only small text files. There are however cookies called Tracking Cookies which track what websites and web pages you view online. Most anti-virus software will remove tracking cookies when scanning the computer.

Most cookies are set to expire after a certain amount of time. You can also manually delete all your cookies. The location of the button to delete cookies varies depending on what webbrower you are using but it can usually be found in the preferences or options menu.
